The Civil War was one of the most trying moments in American History. It was created out of decades of uneasy trust and compromise.
Tensions eventually boiled over after the election of Abraham Lincoln and what southerners considered the "radicalization" of the federal government. One by one southern states seceded from the union citing northern aggression. After four years of fighting, over 600,000 Americans died and millions of dollars worth of damage occurred, especially in the Confederate states. Many questions were left unanswered, how would the Southern states be re-admitted to the Union? How would southern sympathizers be treated? What now would officially become of the institution of slavery? |
